It has become a catch-all phrase to describe all things traditionally masculine. I agree with you completely - hypermasculinity is a very specific set of attitudes/behaviors, but like so many other buzzwords in student affairs, it has become bastardized to the point of irrelevance. My argument is for using the word only to describe those behaviors you mention, not everything else. A guy who likes to drink and hang out at the fraternity house may or not be hypermasculine, and we need to be careful about throwing that phrase around lightly. Good thoughts here - thanks for sharing!Gentry McCrearyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12352202752529729052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384046705046471570.post-48588856604217985952015-12-09T13:36:37.013-08:002015-12-09T13:36:37.013-08:00I encourage folks to check out something we starte...I encourage folks to check out something we started here at UNC a few years ago. https://studentwellness.unc.edu/our-services/violence-prevention/unc-mens-project
Happy to share more info and connect folks to the project leadership if you are interested in learning more.

For what's worth, I don't know anyone in my professional circle of colleagues who views hyper-masculinity as: Guys living together in apartments or fraternity houses, guys who like to hang out with their buddies and drink beer, guys who go to the gym, guys who have sex with women outside the confines of a committed relationship, or guys who choose to sit at home on a Tuesday night and play video games instead of coming out for a program on campus. This seems like a simplistic characterization of a serious field of gender studies.

I also don't know anyone in my professional circle who believes that "anyone who fits the traditional male gender stereotype is hypermasculine".

Hyper-masculinity is typically used in the settings I work in- fraternity life, athletics, LGBTQ to name a few- to describe behaviors, not people, that are consistent with overt degradation of women, gay men, or other men that fall outside the John Wayne archetype, as well as acts of physical violence, significant preoccupation with violent sex including habitual watching and discussion of pornography and raunchy sex talk with other men, and significant preoccupation with violence as it pertains to guns/war, sports, video games, movies and other media. This is not an exhaustive list, but certainly describes behaviors beyond "traditional male stereotypes", with an emphasis on "hyper"...beyond just traditionally masculine. It is the end of the masculine behavioral spectrum; the most aggressive, the most sexually self-serving, the least accepting of women or "non-traditional" men.

Otherwise, applaud the interest in engaging all men. Many, many, many people in our field have made this their life's work.Aaron Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05729260579766191902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384046705046471570.post-12289156557176155612015-12-09T11:45:51.981-08:002015-12-09T11:45:51.981-08:00This is probably one of my favorite pieces yet- th...This is probably one of my favorite pieces yet- thanks for sharing!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15067119044296983104noreply@blogger.com
