As we strive to support our students and help them feel, and more importantly BE valued, we cannot neglect to challenge them as we continue to support them in their growth. The campus is a marketplace of ideas. And instead of simply rejecting notions that we disagree with or arguing with the objective of winning the point, we need to help our students and colleagues learn to listen, consider, and formulate ideas in light of new evidence, or to take in the information and discover that it supports their current beliefs. I've been a career long advocate and activist for Social Justice and now I'm shamed for speaking on such topics as a person with so much privilege. In Grad School, Jay and I created Safe Zone at USC and one of its primary intentions was to disrupt the previous safe space of ignorance and systemic injustice for GLBT community members. Now, I imagine that the safety of those we were disrupting would be put up as a defense against a cultural change like ours.
